Local VS Overseas.

In less than a week's time, I'll be flying off to Aussie for my undergrad studies.
& I'm really glad I get to fly off for these 2 years.

It's weird isn't it? I get a lot of people asking me:
"Would you bear to leave?"
"How about Bronson?"
"How often will you come back?"

But yesterday, I got hit by this harsh comment
"Don't come back so often and waste money"
& best still,
"She's going to some dumb shit school. Can study in NTU don't want, need to go a stupid school and waste money"

That, coming from a undergraduate from a local university.

I get comments from many people, including friends and friends of friends, to ask me to come back more often, spend more time with my family and friends etc. But never have I came across such a brainless comment.

& what's the big deal with local universities? I know of many people who squeezed themselves into these local uni and into some courses that they're not even interested in. Because of?
Well local uni is THE best, nothing can ever replace it.

Quit this old fashion thinking already?

If you're pursuing a degree that you have zero interest in, and know you won't be working in such an industry in future, won't you be wasting more money, and worse of all, your own time and youth? You make yourself so miserable, all for?

The cert from a local U?

Besides, what do you know of the teaching in these local Us when you're not even studying in one of it now? How do you know that, it is one of the best? Can you assure that they make sure you understand everything and not just teach for the sake of teaching?

Furthermore, I don't see what's wrong with pursuing a degree overseas. To emphasize this further, MY UNI is not what you said as a "dumb shit school".

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010, Uni Melb is ranked among the top 100.

Enough said. Because I don't see any of our own local uni in the top 100 ranking.

I'm not saying our own universities are not good. There're reasons why people fly in all the way from China, India etc to come to our university to study. That's the same reason why we fly to other countries as well. So what if I can get into a local uni?

I've been there, done that, & it's just not the system I want to be in to get my degree.

Time to abandon your traditional thinking of "using money to buy a degree" whenever people mention studying overseas. It is a disgrace to say such words, or even have such a thinking. You'll just be laughed at if you speak this in front of so many others.

I also don't see what's wrong with the degrees offered by SIM or studying in Curtin or any other private schools in Singapore. You know what? Not everyone can make it into local u, but it's anyone's rights to want to pursue their further studies in a school they feel is good for themselves.

So stop condemning already.

Quit imposing your idea on anyone else. Not everyone shares your same thinking, nor do they have to.

Yes,

I must say your blog is really interesting and i totally agree with this. Yeah, studying overseas is about the experience! (: And after two years of horrible JC exp, I would never want to go through this academic system again. But yeah, parents & relatives will always go "the three singapore "oxfords" ( smu, ntu, nus) are the best" -.-

my dad said that his friend was a ntu reject. Then he went overseas and eventually got a cambridge scholarship and went to become a ntu lecturer. How ironic -.-

keep up on the good blog!

Thanks for reading dear! And yes I went through the whole JC jiggaminga thing and it's so horrifying! It's like we're studying very "dead" stuff that we won't ever use in future (think mixing alcohol and acids together?), and it stresses us out so much!

Ohwell, we can never stop how people think and all, just got to be happy with what we're pursuing if we really really want it, and fight for it! :)
